This opinion was posted over at Wizbang. It is quite clear, somewhat concise and spot on. I think it needs no clarification.

Islam is the only religion which, after its members participate in acts of violence, automatically comes with the caveat that "they do not represent all members of that faith," and admonishes us not to brand all Muslims as "extremists."
In all fairness to those who make this claim, it happens to be true. I have had many muslim friends over the course of my lifetime, and not one has openly espoused the beliefs espoused by the terrorists.
This is not to diminish the fact that these same people make no effort to speak out against these thugs, save for those serving in the US military who actively work to kill them. To paint all muslims with a this brush when it doesn't even apply to the majority of them is at best problematic.

But, don't you think many are saying hurrah quietly and to themselves? When it comes to criticizing the actions of the extremists most Muslims silence is deafening. Islam is the only religion I'm aware of that offers no choice. It is based on forcible submission.

It is based on forcible submission.
Terrorism is. I wouldn't necessarily say the same for Islam in general.
Therein lies your answer to your first question as well.
